Empowering Student Innovation for Climate Resilience: T-AIM & Capgemini Academic Grand Challenge

Description

Under the aegis of T-AIM (powered by NASSCOM) in partnership with Capgemini, the Academic Grand Challenge on Climate Change invited student teams from colleges across India to build AI/ML solutions to predict heat waves and forecast Air Quality Index (AQI) for five Telangana cities. The challenge aimed to harness youthful ingenuity and data science to address climate-induced risks—heat waves and deteriorating air quality—impacting urban and semi-urban communities. Participating teams were required to develop predictive models using publicly available weather, pollution, and historical data.

Value Addition

Encouraged students to apply AI/ML techniques to real-world climate problems, promoting socially relevant innovation. Enabled capacity building among young tech talent in domains of environmental forecasting and climate risk analysis. Reinforced collaboration between government-backed mission (T-AIM), industry (Capgemini), and academia — fostering an ecosystem for sustainable and responsible AI innovation.

Outcome
• Wide participation across Indian colleges/universities following the public announcement and outreach. • Finalists would get seed-fund rewards and opportunities to engage with industry and ecosystem leaders — creating pathways from academic prototype to real-world deployment. • The initiative underscored the commitment of T-AIM and Capgemini toward climate resilience and community-oriented AI use-cases.
